Dear Dana,

Hope you're having a wonderful summer.  It's hard to believe that it's almost time for the kids to go back to school!  Indeed, the most wonderful time of the year.  Enjoy the newsletter and please let us know if there is a topic you would like to see discussed.

Water-Based Coating & Pigments

For many years BJB has produced some very unique flexible coatings that work great with urethane elastomers and flexible foams.  Our popular SC-89 series has been used in prototyping and special effects for decades to produce a flexible, color and UV stable coating.  The down side to the SC-89 has been that it is solvent based.  So BJB went back to the lab to produce a more eco-friendly, water based alternative to save on shipping costs and lower exposure risks for users.

Our latest offering, SC-92, is proving to be a very high performance flexible coating with many great attributes to offer.

·         Good adhesion on a variety of substrates

·         High elongation properties

·         Good abrasion resistance

·         Color and UV stability (great coating for non-UV stable elastomers like the F-series)

·         Dries nearly as fast as our solvent-based SC-89.

·         The SC-92 can be applied to parts after demolding but also performs great as an in-mold coating so parts pop out with the integrated color and mold finish

·         Ready to spray without thinning using any standard airbrush or touch-up gun.

The other exciting news to announce is that BJB is now offering Water Based Pigments for our line of water based coatings like the SC-92; the 7100 Series Pigments*.  These highly concentrated pigments come in a range of colors and can be used in everything from BJB's water based coatings to a variety of Latex products commonly used in the Special Effects Industry!  The high concentration means that a little pigment goes a long way for good color saturation while saving material properties.

*Note that these pigments are not compatible with standard urethane casting materials, foams, or silicone products.

What is Demold Time?

Keep in mind there is no ASTM standard for demold times. When you are comparing data sheets between different suppliers, you should not consider the demold time as a comparative value.

There are several variables that can affect demold time. The pre-conditioned temperature of the liquids prior to mixing and pouring, the mold temperature, the configuration of the part, and the overall mass of the part will affect demold time.

The values that BJB reports on its data sheets are derived from the materials and mold being pre-conditioned to 77°F (25°C) and the size of the sample specimen mold is approximately 2.5" x 1.375" x 0.125". We feel that when we can remove the specimen from the mold without distorting it, that is considered to be our demold time.
